denim futures exhibition
Exhibition design for Fabrica X in King's Cross as part of their Denim Futures show (October 2023 - March 2024).
We were asked to design, curate and build this piece of storytelling showcase in only 3 weeks. In addition to the design, we also wrote its copy. Focusing on process and inspired by the industrial character of the factories the recycling of denim takes place in, as well as a need to easily disassemble and reuse at future venues, we opted for a raw steel key clamp system and OSB board panels. This is juxtaposed against the softer materials at their different stages of production and punctuated with graphic text and imagery to clearly convey its circular message. The design playfully combines artefacts, materials, text, and image printed on recycled carboard panels at different heights and depths to to guide the visitor on a dynamic learning experience. "At the heart of sustainable denim lies collaboration. Our showcase tells the story of how Renewcell, Circulose, Fibre Trace, Good Earth Cotton, Wizcot, and AGI Denim, seamlessly work together across the globe to create a radically circular and traceable process of manufacturing denim. Our journey begins with collecting and recycling disposed cotton clothes and turning them into sheets of cellulose pulp, which is blended with cotton grown in a regenerative farming process, and spun into yarn that is invisibly pigmented to be tracked and monitored. It is then dyed and processed with 100% recycled water, and woven into denim used to make garments. But that's not all. Our garments are stitched with special dissolvable threads so that at the end of their life, they can be easily deconstructed and put back into the start of our sustainable loop."
