scoop house
Located on a steeply sloped site in the Algarve, Portugal, this sustainable villa scoops landscape and house in a single move to create a central external patio that is the heart of the project. Based on reinterpreting tradition, the concept is born from a southern Portuguese vernacular house being subtracted to reveal an inner filling of different materiality - a terracotta screen made of vernacular screening blocks. The villa is designed as a CLT structure with terracotta floors and external shading screen controlling direct solar exposure from the south. Carefully oriented to balance sun and shaded areas to the patio, the double height space in the living room allows for hot air to rise and be passively exhausted at the roof. |
