stepped loft
Echoing the original plan of this Victorian terrace house, the additional massing follows its L-shape, but breaks down an otherwise imposing volume. This is achieved by stepping down segments that pull out of each other, like a telescope, articulating clerestories in light filled rooms. The grey brick cheeks of the outrigger, which blend with the roof colour, follow the same stepping logic, creating a tapered and textured effect.
Our aim was to be as elegant and sympathetic as possible to blend a contemporary addition into the historic architecture and the existing fabric, using materials that are similar or matching to existing and what is also found in the immediate neighbourhood. Final photography: Luke O'Donovan |
