Waylamps of Barnet is a community-led heritage trail that reconnects neighbourhoods across Barnet through light, storytelling, and discovery. Rather than creating a single linear route, the project proposes a series of connected clusters linked by an existing bus route, making the trail accessible to a wider range of residents and visitors. Along the route, four illuminated Waylamps act as landmarks, places to pause, gather, and orient yourself while discovering local stories and destinations.
The project was shaped through direct engagement with Barnet communities. Shadow puppet workshops invited residents and families to explore storytelling through light and silhouette, inspired by the pioneering animation work of local legend, Lotte Reiniger. Walks, interviews, and conversations with local people helped identify places of personal and collective importance, uncovering hidden histories and everyday memories across the borough. The design language also draws inspiration from W. Heath Robinson, celebrating imaginative assemblages and playful engineering. Constructed from reused materials and powered by integrated solar lighting, the Waylamps give old materials and stories a new life. Design collaboration with Wayward Photography: Luke O'Donovan |
